FHR Site Aachen
The Aachen site of the Fraunhofer Institute for High Frequency Physics and Radar Techniques FHR was founded to promote the scientific exchange between Fraunhofer FHR and the RWTH Aachen.
Our site is fully affiliated to the Fraunhofer Society and is located at the RWTH Institute for High Frequency Technology IHF. The strong interconnection of FHR and IHF enables us to shape the area of radar technology.

Research topics
We are currently focusing on topics in the following fields of research:
Traffic
The increasing automation and autonomization of air, rail and road traffic is demanding enormous requirements on the sensors installed on carrier systems. As part of our research activities, we are trying to prepare radar technology and radar measurement technology to face these challenges.
As part of the ATRIUM research project, for example, we are currently developing a radar target simulator that can be used to verify radar sensors installed in cars. With this concept, we want to make possible the qualification of radar-based driver assistance systems and contribute to the safety of all road users in the traffic of the future.
Polarimetry
With the help of radar polarimetry, radar targets can be characterized much more extensively than with conventional radars. Among others, polarimetry makes it possible to identify the physical process that causes the reflection on the radar target. In this way, vegetation and artificial buildings can be distinguished and separated from each other in remote sensing, for example. Our site has set itself the goal of developing radar polarimetry for other areas of application in addition to remote sensing.
